Former Cleveland Council President George Forbes recalls a White House stay with Jimmy Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter's trip home from a 1980 visit to Cleveland turned into quite the story for one of Cleveland's most influential political figures. Leon Bibb reports. RELATED STORY: In many ways, Cleveland played a recurring role in the story of President Jimmy Carter’s time in office. One of the most notable moments came during the heated 1980 presidential campaign when Cleveland became a political epicenter. On Oct. 28, 1980, less than a week before Election Day, Cleveland hosted the only presidential debate between President Carter and his challenger, former California Governor Ronald Reagan. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Cleveland Press, the city’s convention bureau, and the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, the event drew national attention to Public Hall.
