The Disused Sheffield District Railway Part 1 - Treeton & Catcliffe Explore
The Disused Sheffield District Railway Part 1 - Treeton & Catcliffe Explore In this week's abandoned railway explore we are back in South Yorkshire. We're skirting around the Rotherham/Sheffield border to look at the story of the Sheffield District Railway. Opening in 1900, the line was independent to the big railway companies back then. When the LD&ECR (Lancashire Derbyshire & East Coast Railway) was looking to extend into Sheffield from the Beighton Branch, they encountered objection from the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR) - which later became the Great Central Railway and ended up owning the LD&ECR. The result was to enter Sheffield via a longer route from the East via Treeton, Catcliffe & Tinsley. In this Part 1, we look at a bit of the history of the line and explore the old trackbed from Treeton Junction to Catcliffe Junction, over the viaduct and towards the throat of Tinsley Yard. We pass through the site of Catcliffe Station, which closed in 1939. A double platform wooden halt in a very exposed location. Our journey ends at the eastern entrance to the former Tinsley Yard. A large yard from the 1960s that contained a marshalling yard and traction maintenance depot.
