The claim that there are no good female directors is not true, but (!) there are certainly fewer female directors in the film industry due to systemic challenges. The film industry is traditionally characterized by structural gender bias. In the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, there was a surprising, almost sensational development: the American feature competition included ten films, six of which were made by female directors. The documentary competition The equivalent number is nine films, seven of which were made by female directors. In total, 13 of the 19 US-made films selected for the Sundance competition - almost 70 percent - were made by women. The trend is somewhat balanced out in the glittering premiere program, where ten of the 21 films are signed by female filmmakers. And yet, there are no important female directors in the world.
