I had the privilege of playing with him many times as a kid and teenager, and my father grew up watching him perform in Houston’s Third Ward starting in 1960. In this video, I dive into Gatemouth’s original 1951 Fender Esquire, which he acquired in the late ’60s at a music store in Houston. This iconic guitar was used on classic 1950s recordings, including “Okie Dokie Stomp” — Gate’s signature instrumental from 1954 on Peacock Records.
