Почему он боится земли? Вся жизнь в небе.
Is it true that a swift can go almost three years without landing? How does it sleep if it's always flying? Can it eat, drink, and even mate without landing? And if this bird is designed for perpetual flight, why are we increasingly finding swifts on the ground? Look up at the sky over the city on a summer evening. Those dark silhouettes screeching and darting near the rooftops are swifts. And almost all you see is pure flight. Their bodies are like teardrops, their wings like two blades, and their feet so tiny that ancient people believed this bird had no legs at all. Hence the scientific name of the genus—Apus, meaning "legless." In this episode, we follow the lead of a bird that almost never touches the ground and dissect it, from wingtip to tiny claw. A young swift, having left the nest, can spend two to three years in the air without landing: there it sleeps, grows, drinks, and crosses entire continents. How is this possible? We'll explore unihemispheric sleep, in which one half of the brain sleeps while the other guides the bird (the same way dolphins sleep), and we'll talk honestly about its speed without inflated records, how it eats aerial plankton and drinks while flying, and why pairs often mate in mid-air. And then, what's currently of particular concern to many. We'll follow the swift's entire journey to Africa and back (up to 14,000 kilometers one way), and we'll understand how the young bird finds its way all alone, why swifts return to the same crack under the roof year after year, and why they fall more and more often. And most importantly, what each of us can actually do for them. Let me say right away: this is not a retelling of someone else's videos. I prepare the script, logic, voiceover, and editing from scratch, and I verify everything I say with reputable sources. Timecodes: 00:00 — A bird that lives in the sky. 01:01 — A glider body: wings, feathers, hook-like legs. 04:00 — Almost three years without a single landing. 08:15 — How a swift sleeps in flight. 10:32 — One-hemispheric sleep. 12:40 — Swift speed — without inflated records. 16:57 — How it eats and drinks in the air. 19:37 — Love and water in flight. 21:04 — Nest: a crack under the roof instead of a cliff. 23:15 — Eggs, chicks, and fidelity to one place. 25:03 — A chick surviving days of hunger. 29:27 — The road to Africa: 20,000 km a year. 33:31 — How a bird finds its way all alone. 34:47 — The sun, stars, and the magnetic field. 37:00 — Millennial confusion: what is a swift? 44:37 — Jumping from under a roof: flight or death. 48:15 — Why swifts are becoming fewer. 50:14 — Facade repairs and disappearing cracks. 53:15 — Nest boxes: how to preserve a swift's home. 54:21 — What to do if you find a swift on the ground. 58:59 — Why swifts fall. 01:00:00 — Take care of those who share the sky with us. Tell us in the comments: do swifts live above your house? Do you hear their screeching in the sky in the summer? The script, editing, and voiceover are original and original.
