A Big Find - Hunting and Field Trial Spaniels

On the plains of North Dakota, professional dog trainer Hannah Hayes can be found running spaniels. Since getting her first field trial dog, an English Cocker named Ruth, Hannah has earned ribbons at field trials and Ruth has become a two-time Field Champion.  Hannah is a competitive person. She finds the challenge of training English Cockers and Springer Spaniels for field trials to be a way of working towards the best version of herself. She also uses it to go against the grain—by hunting her field trial dogs. “In my opinion, these dogs should be hunting,” she says. “Hunting them challenges them in a way that I would like to see.” For Hannah, hunting wild birds builds connections with people she cares about, too, whether it’s over social media or in person. She spends hunting season hosting people from around the United States. Over big meals lovingly called family dinners, they bond over the challenges and highlights of the day. “It’s the best getting to share these moments with the dogs on these bomb birds with so many people from around the country who want to come up,” said Hannah.
