From Tak Bai District, Narathiwat Province, to Kelantan State in northern Malaysia, the distance is only a few kilometers. Traveling is easy, with a ferry or car ferry crossing the Golok River in just a few minutes. Kelantan State has a large population of Malaysian-Thai, or Siamese, people. Historically, this is a result of the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty between Siam and Britain, which divided Malay territory into two parts, dividing the Siamese people into two nations. Despite their presence on Malaysian soil, the Siamese people here maintain their unique way of life, including their housing, occupations, cuisine, and continued use of the Thai language. Importantly, the people here are staunch Buddhists, and numerous temples have been built, as they regard temples as central gathering points, places of worship, and schools for teaching Thai to their children. For example, in Tumpat District, there are 12 temples. Phu Yai Chareon and everyone we met consistently confirmed that they were Malaysian, born and raised here. But being of Siamese descent, they maintain a strict adherence to Thai-Thai customs, traditions, and cultures, and maintain strong ties. They still visit and visit relatives on the Thai side, even though they live in different countries.
