Without a doubt, Mitsubishi is one of the most traditional automakers when it comes to mid-size pickup trucks. This is the 2026 Mitsubishi Triton Katana, the top-of-the-line version of the pickup. Along with the Toyota Hilux, it's known for being extremely robust and prepared for off-road driving. But, in one of the most competitive segments of the market, Is it worth buying a pickup like this today? And what makes it different from the competition? Well, to answer all that, let's talk about the pros, cons, and show all the details of this beast on wheels. History For those who don't know, the L200 arrived here in 1991, being one of the first mid-size pickups in the segment. And since 1998 it has been produced here in the country, in the state of Goiás. At the end of 2024, it reached its sixth generation. And a curious detail: it dropped the L200 name and became simply Triton. It's as if, overnight, I retired the name Rodrigo… and started introducing myself only as Losano. I'd say it's curious, to say the least, haha… --------------------------- VERSIONS Another thing that stands out is that it has a multitude of versions: Starting with the GL, more geared towards fleet owners, with the option of manual and automatic transmission. Then we have the intermediate versions, such as the GLS, Tarmac, HPE, and HPE-S. And at the top of the line are the Katana — which is the one in this video — and the Savana, which is more focused on heavier off-road use. Besides being better equipped, this version stands out for some aesthetic details, such as this beautiful roll bar, wheel arch moldings, and black details on the body. But let's talk about the engine, which performs very well here! ENGINE Under the hood we have Mitsubishi's well-known 2.4-liter turbodiesel engine, now updated, which here generates 205 horsepower and an impressive 47.9 kgfm of torque. And for those who like numbers, it does 0-100 km/h in 11.4 seconds and reaches 190 km/h. Not bad for this big truck that weighs over 2 tons. And here's an important point: In this generation, it adopted a BITURBO engine, that is. One smaller turbine, more focused on low revs and the other turbine for higher revs, remembering that both turbines work together. In practice, this means that it has a lot of power, even at low revs. Which is great for a pickup truck, which is made to carry weight, tow and tackle trails without suffering. But we'll talk more about that when the car is running. It's good to mention that it has excellent sound insulation and the engine compartment is well organized. For the price, it could have a hood damper, but I'll give it a break since it's essentially a work vehicle. TRANSMISSION The transmission is a conventional 6-speed automatic. I know the brand itself has more modern transmissions, with up to 8 speeds, BUT I believe the brand tried to use its most robust and reliable transmission, mainly considering heavier use. Unfortunately, it lost one of the things I liked most about the previous generation, which were the paddle shifters. Now, if you want to change gears in "manual" mode, you have to come here to use the lever. But that's just nitpicking. And along with the transmission, we have the traction system selector here.
