Most of them happy songs, with a typical habanera rhythm: the pa-dam-pam-pam. Milongas go way back, to somewhere around the 1850s: The milonga campera originated in the region of northern Argentina, Uruguay, and the southern part of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. Milonga is a fusion of music from all over the world. With musical origins from Spain and Portugal, African rhythms from Angola, Cuban habanera and guajira, and various local influences. Until about 1916, the habanera rhythm was also the way that tangos were being played. After 1916 these accents disappeared from tango and tango developed towards a 4x4 rhythm. In 1931 the milonga as we know it today emerged, the milonga ciudadana (the urban milonga) when Sebastián Piana wrote “Milonga sentimental”. We did a milonga top 5 video before, featuring modern milongas. Now it’s time for the milongas from the epoca d’oro. There are so many songs to choose from, I narrowed it down to the mid-tempo milongas, roughly between 100 and 110 bpm. So not the very fast ones, and not the slower ones. We may do another top 5 video on those… At number 5 we have the orchestra of Pedro Laurenz. He recorded a number of fine milongas, including his own composition ‘Milonga de mis amores’. But at number 5 we have something of a theme song for this video: ‘La vida es una milonga’, recorded in 1941. Music written by Fernando Montoni, lyrics by Rodolfo Sciammarella. And sung by Martín Podestá. "La vida es una milonga y hay que saberla bailar… ". At number 4, it’s Rodolfo Biagi. Not all of his milongas are easy to dance to, but I do like this one: ‘Flor de Monserrat’, recorded in 1945. Music written by Juan Santini, lyrics by Vicente Planells del Campo. And sung by Alberto Amor. The flower of Monserrat was a beautiful girl. Everybody loved this virgencita. But how would this story end? At number 3: Juan d’Arienzo. D’Arienzo recorded some 85 milongas, many of them big sucesses. For this top 5 we chose one of his instrumentals: ‘La espuela’, recorded in 1946. Music composed by Elsa Pigrau Güidini. Hit it! When it comes to milonga, one of my favourite orchestras is the orchestra of Edgardo Donato. He recorded a number of milonga classics, mostly between 1938 and ’42, like 'Sacale punta', 'Ella es así', 'Campo afuera' … And this track that he composed himself with lyrics by Carlos Pesce: ‘La milonga que faltaba’. Recorded in 1939 with singer Horacio Lagos. At number 1: the orchestra of Francisco Canaro. Canaro recorded so many milongas that are great to dance to, we could easily fill a top 5 with Francisco Canaro alone. It wasn’t easy having to choose between the recordings with Maida, Famá and the instrumentals, but we decided on ‘No hay tierra como la mía’, recorded in 1939.Music written by Charlo, lyrics by Enrique Cadícamo. And sung by Ernesto Famá. Enjoy! Please note: We do not own the music in this video. Songs are included for educational purposes only. You can buy them from various providers or stream them on Spotify.
