Yes! You CAN do long exposures with an Alt Az telescope Mount - Astrophotography Guide, Tips.
One of my big rants is when I read on forums and groups that users cannot use Alt-Az mounts for long-exposure astrophotography. That's simply not true. People spend thousands on quality scopes to be told they are useless for anything other than visual and planets. This video goes through both the issues and how to overcome them with science. Finally, I summarise a few simple steps if you'd like to ditch the spreadsheets and just start snapping. Sophie the kind human and Charlie the cool dude shows what happens to the 'W' of Cassiopeia in the sky. I then look at the difference between an Alt-Az mount and an EQ (Equitorial) mount. Then I look at the science - how to overcome this issue with a combination of some maths and planning your observation sessions. Lastly, we look at a real work example - M31 the Andromeda Galaxy. Any questions or comments please leave below. And yes I got altitude and latitude mixed up a couple of times.
