Bateshwar Group of Temples, Morena, Madhya Pradesh

Bateshwar Group of Temples (Bateshwar ya Batesara ke naam se bhi jaana jaata hai) Madhya Pradesh ke Morena district mein Padavali village ke paas Chambal valley ke rugged hills par situated hai. Yeh ek massive cluster hai – almost 200 small sandstone temples ka, jo 8th se 10th century (kuch sources ke mutabik 11th tak) ke beech Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty ne banwaye the. Yeh temples mostly Shiva, Vishnu aur Shakti ko dedicated hain, representing different Hindu traditions. Architecture early Nagara style ka hai – simple shikharas, intricate carvings of apsaras, mythical creatures, gods-goddesses aur celestial beings ke saath. Sab kuch local red-brown sandstone se bana hai, jo time ke saath bahut sundar dikhta hai. Pehle yeh site completely ruins mein thi – stones ke piles ke neeche daba hua. 13th century ke baad invaders aur natural calamities se bahut damage hua. Chambal ke dreaded dacoits (baghis) ke hideout ke wajah se bhi yeh area logon se door raha, isliye kuch had tak preserved reh gaya. 1920 mein ASI ne protected site declare kiya, lekin real revival 2005 mein hua jab ASI ke Superintending Archaeologist K.K. Muhammed ne ambitious restoration project start kiya. Unhone scattered stones ko jigsaw puzzle ki tarah collect kiya, clean kiya aur almost 60+ temples ko wapas original form mein reassemble kiya. Aaj bhi kuch temples restored dikhte hain aur baaki ruins mein, lekin overall site bahut impressive lagti hai. Yeh place Morena se about 30 km east aur Gwalior se 35 km north par hai. Nearby Padavali ka famous Vishnu temple aur Mitawali ke chhatris bhi visit kar sakte ho – teeno milakar ek full day trip ban jaati hai. Agar aap history, architecture aur ancient Indian heritage ke fan ho to Bateshwar ek hidden gem hai. Khamosh hills, scattered temples aur detailed stone carvings dekhkar feel hota hai jaise time machine mein 1000+ saal peeche chale gaye ho. ASI protected site hai isliye peaceful aur well-maintained hai, lekin abhi bhi fully crowded tourist spot nahi bana – isliye peaceful visit ke liye perfect!
