Changing Lives Edwina Betts in Bougainville
Floating across a swollen river in a four wheel drive is just another day at work for Australian aid specialist Edwina Betts as she works with her local counterparts in Bougainville to rebuild health and education systems torn apart by 30 years of fighting. With the island's new capital of Buka separated from the mainland, Edwina's journey starts and ends by boat with plenty of water in between. The road to Arawa, the old capital destroyed during the conflict, is almost devoid of bridges so swollen river crossings by four wheel drive being just one of the hazards facing aid delivery in this troubled region.
