Master musician and composer Anxo Pintos has shown me the way of the hurdy gurdy, otherwise known as the zanfona in Galician. *To know more about Anxo's music and projects, please visit: (  / anxo.pintos  ) & (http://bit.ly/Anxo_Playlist) Five years ago I briefly met Anxo after a show I played in Vigo. While preparing for my return trip to Galicia, a friend shared a Berrogüetto album with me and my favorite tune on that record turned out to be one of his, "K." There was only one thing left to do, reach out to Anxo and spend some time with the composer. Anxo explained that while "K" is a jota (spelled xota in Galician), it looks towards the future of Galician music. The A and C parts are in the standard 6 feel, but the B part is full of twists and turns, even leaving the 6 rhythm—like a Picassoesque cubist melody, he explained. Basically, it took me forever to get the B part internalized, but it was worth every brain hurting moment. I was satisfactorily exhausted by the end of the session, but I felt a sense of accomplishment and new musical and personal friendship. We finished the day roasting chestnuts gathered from the area and drinking wine with our families. ABOUT THE PROJECT OTHERLANDS: A Global Music Exploration follows GRAMMY-nominated 5-string American fiddler Casey Driessen as he travels with his family to various countries across the globe to meet with local acoustic-based musicians with roots in their own traditions. Musical exchanges and travels are documented via audio, video and photography elements with collected materials released over the course of the project via his website and social media outlets and official musical releases likely to come at the end of travels. OTHERLANDS is an independently designed and produced project that is self-contained with a small collection of audio and video equipment. All engineering and recording, including any post-production, can be set up, operated, and completed by Casey wherever on the globe he happens to be.
