The 80s Song That Had To Be Parodied...| Professor Of Rock

This multi-million record-selling artist isn’t exactly known for taking suggestions. But that hasn’t stopped legions of fans from sending him ideas for his next song. In fact, Weird Al Yankovic is bombarded with so many pitches that he has called it the bane of his existence. However, that being said... there was one time that he did make an exception. Afterall, when an 80s Icon Madonna told a friend that she wished that Weird would make fun of her smash #1 hit from 1984. Weird Al Obliged with one of his funniest take ups ever. The video and song Like a Surgeon would land the comedy genius or Sonic comic back on the billboard hot 100 and drive his album Dare to be Stupid to the top of the charts. So, get ready, it’s the completely unexaggerated, absolutely true story about one of the greatest songs of our time. Am I being sarcastic? Find out next Coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock. Alright, in honor of his new movie, today we are once again giving you the Weird Al treatment. In the past we have covered Eat It, Fat, and Smells Like Nirvana. But for this episode we’re going back to the 80s to take an in-depth look at after 80s parody that has a bit of a twist… A great story to this one.. LEt’s get into it. By the time Weird Al released his third album, Dare to Be Stupid in 1985, it was clear that he was here to stay. No longer just an unknown accordion-wielding goofball, Al had broken into the mainstream to become a world-renown accordion-wielding goofball. There was no denying that Weird Al, aka the Eat It Guy, had become a household name. His Michael Jackson parody Eat It had reached #12 on the Hot 100 single was the breakthrough he never expected would happen. Said Al, “the day that video went into heavy rotation on MTV, my anonymity disappeared. Literally overnight, I became a celebrity... As a person who was fairly anonymous his whole life, I'd suddenly be walking down the street and having people stare at me.” After that, my albums went platinum. My concert tours sold out.” And that kind of success was enough to prove to Al had figured out a winning formula. Parodying chart topping artists was the way to go. After all Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ had gone to #1. In the future, Al would go after more chart toppers like MJ’s Bad, Tiffany’s remake of I Think We’re Alone Now, Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing, and Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise. And he would keep plenty of Top 10 hits in his crosshairs as well. But to follow-up the success of Eat It, Weird Al turned his attention to a rising star who had just turned in a #1 hit of her own. Madonna and the reason he did it was Well… She requested it. Like Al, Madonna’ career was just taking off. In the summer of 1983, she released her debut album, Madonna. That went to #8 in the US and featured three Top 20 hits: Holiday, Lucky Star and Borderline.
