Though he was only there for a brief period of time before abandoning the army to become a full-time writer, Netflix' 2022 film "The Pale Blue Eye" imagines that he experienced more at West Point than drill and uniform inspections. According to this story, he helped solve a series of murders so gruesome that they turned him from a wayward youth into “an adventurer into...horrible underground passages of the human soul."
