Memento mori. You have likely heard this Latin phrase meaning "Remember death" or "Remember that you will surely die." It does not mean to fear death. Rather, it means that only when we face death head-on, rather than avoiding it, can we properly confront the essence of life. I visited Venerable Neunghaeng at Jeongto Village Jajae Hospital, a specialized Buddhist hospice hospital located in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, to meet one of the individuals in Korea who has witnessed the most deaths. Following the publication of his previous book, *If We Meet Again in Spring*, Venerable Neunghaeng has now released a new book titled *The Bonfire of Life*. Regretting the lack of proper hospice facilities within the Korean Buddhist community, Venerable Neunghaeng began his hospice work and has bid farewell to thousands of people over the past 30 years. This book, *The Bonfire of Life*, is a collection of reflections written while providing hospice care to those dying of terminal cancer and witnessing their final moments. The absolute and immutable fact that we will all face death someday is indeed the greatest teacher that teaches us ‘how we should live’ the time remaining. Let us share stories about the moment when the ‘bonfire of life’ goes out. ---------------------------- Cho Hyun TV Hyusimjeong Cho Hyun | Former religion specialist reporter for The Hankyoreh, author, meditator, General Director of Nachatsa [email protected] What do you want to possess? Beyond Korea, he interviewed world-renowned meditators such as the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Upandita, Photirak, and Thomas Keating. His book Journey to Find Myself*, written after personally experiencing numerous spiritual practices, was selected as the number one humanities book by Korean netizens in 2001. *Her Seclusion*, which traces the hidden lives of eminent monks, won the Buddhist Publishing Award and the Buddhist Book of the Year Award, while *The Land Hidden by the Sky won the Buddhist Press Award. In addition, *Ullim*, a book about Christian spiritual figures, was selected as one of the "Top 100 Liberal Arts Books" by four of Korea's leading Protestant theological universities. *We Decided to Live Differently*, an exploration of village communities for those who find it lonely alone and painful to be together, was selected as the Humanities Book of the Year by the JoongAng Ilbo. He was also selected as one of Korea's representative authors by the Korean Publishers Association. In 2024, he received the "Korean Humanities Value Award."
