How Badly Do You Want It?

Week 4 is complete! The Medtronic Minneapolis Marathon training is officially 25% complete. Summer training has been a reminder that every season asks something different of you. Running through Wisconsin heat isn't the same as running through winter snow, but the lesson is surprisingly similar: adapt, stay consistent, and keep moving forward. Finding the positive in each run is important. This training block, I'm incorporating new strength exercises, mixing in new speed work, and embracing the slow, easy miles. I've come to appreciate that both are equally important. The fast miles build fitness. The easy miles build endurance and recovery. You need both similar to CRE where days are really busy so it's important to schedule down time. Speed workouts still demand respect. It was only three years ago that I began training with a run coach. I know before every session that discomfort is coming; sometimes, it's like I want to crawl out of my skin. That's when the familiar voice shows up. "You don't have to do this." "You can slow down." "Skipping one interval won't matter." And it's right. No one would know if I skipped a repeat or eased off the pace. Except me. That's where discipline takes over and interestingly, a part of me that's looking forward to it because I know this is what it takes to grow. I remind myself how fortunate I am to be training for a marathon in my 50s. Years ago, I made choices that weren't easy at the time but have become part of who I am today. The early mornings or later evenings. The consistency. The recovery. The willingness to stay committed long after the excitement wears off. It's a gift to myself for myself. Whether it's marathon training, building a business, negotiating a commercial real estate deal, or pursuing a goal that matters to you, the question is always the same: How badly do you want it? There isn't a right or wrong answer. There is only the answer you're willing to live with. Listen to that quiet voice within. It usually knows exactly what you're capable of before you do. The hard work is almost always worth it. -------------------- Heather Ewing, CCIM | Founder & President, ABSTRACT Commercial Real Estate LLC Heather has represented over $151M in New Development with retail expertise focused in Downtown Madison and Dane County.
