Barrio de Analco | The Oldest Barrio in New Mexico

Founded in 1610, Barrio de Analco is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the United States and the oldest barrio in New Mexico. Located across the Santa Fe River from the Plaza, it was originally settled by Tlaxcalan Indians from central Mexico who accompanied Spanish colonists and missionaries into New Mexico. The name "Analco" comes from the Nahuatl language and means "on the other side of the river." The barrio became home to laborers, artisans, and Tlaxcalan families who helped build early Santa Fe. It was centered around the historic San Miguel Chapel, one of the oldest churches in the United States. Although the neighborhood was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, it was rebuilt after the Spanish return in the 1690s and remains a living link to Santa Fe's earliest colonial history. Today, Barrio de Analco is known for its centuries-old adobe buildings, rich Hispanic and Native American heritage, and landmarks such as San Miguel Chapel and the Oldest House, making it one of the most historic neighborhoods in North America.
