Exploring Anti-Austerity in the South African Context with Professor Clara E. Mattei
In response to the publication of The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism by Professor Clara E. Mattei, the IEJ hosted a strategic workshop with Mattei on 22 March 2023. The purpose of the hybrid workshop, hosted online and at The Forge in Braamfontein, was to think broadly about how we can understand, challenge and build alternatives to austerity. In addition to a presentation and input from Prof Mattei, Busi Sibeko, Tshidi Lencoasa (Section27), and Fundiswa Ndlela (Budget Justice Coalition) also shared their views on austerity and its far-reaching impacts.
