For any respectable man, a promotion to knighthood ushered in new rules and responsibilities. In both conduct and performance, knights were meant to stand above other soldiers and men-at-arms. They were supposed to be greater fighters, greater citizens, and greater men. In truth, though, many knights took advantage of their status and lent upon it for selfish means. And when called upon for battle, they would serve only grudgingly, especially if the end goal was in opposition to their own views. But one young knight there was in the Seven Kingdoms who proved not only to be a masterful showman, but an ambitious soldier as well. This man was Loras Tyrell. The Knight of Flowers, through his renowned good looks and skill in tournaments, garnered massive fame throughout Westeros, though it was unclear how these traits would translate to a true battlefield. Still, he was named to the Kingsguard, and although the reasons behind his appointment to the position may have been sinister, it was a great honor nonetheless. And when a bitter ally issued a command for Ser Loras to lead a doomed campaign, he answered the call. Regardless of the outcome of the battle or his purpose in being there, the Knight of Flowers demonstrated that he was more than the flashy figure that existed on the surface.
