If you're not spinning at all and you start backwards and end backwards, that's known as a "zero spin." Competitive rollerblader Tim Phang shows you how to do a zero spin in this video. Hi, I'm Tim Phang. I'm 23 years old. I've been skating for about 12 years. I'm from Arlington, Virginia which is right outside of Washington, D.C. I'm now sponsored by Universal Skate Design, and I'm going to be talking to you about rollerblading. One trick that a lot of people do in rollerblading is called jumping gaps. Gaps are anything from sets of stairs to patches of grass. Essentially, anytime you're jumping over an obstacle, you're jumping a gap. When you're jumping gaps, some people like to spin over them. Spins in aggressive skating are measured in degrees so there is a 360 or a 180 or if you're not spinning at all and you start backwards and end backwards, that's known as a "zero spin". When you're doing zero spins the most important thing is to make sure you have your balance correct. Firstly, you want to make sure you're going to have enough speed that you're going to be able to clear the obstacle. Then you want to turn backwards, look over whichever shoulder is more comfortable for you. When you reach the obstacle, you want to jump and then in the air you want to make sure you're able to spot your landing and keep balanced. When you hit the ground, you want to compress your knees to absorb some of the shock of the landing and make sure that you aren't leaning too far forward or backward. If you're leaning too far backward you run the risk of falling backwards and hitting your head. If you're running too far forwards your feet will come out from under you and you'll end up dragging your knees on the ground.
