Bosses of Global “Super Cartel” Nabbed in Luxury Desert Hideaway

While hiding in plain sight in their sanctuary of Dubai, six high-value targets of the “Super Cartel” — global drug lords responsible for a third of all the cocaine in Europe — were arrested in a surprise sweep, authorities say. The raids included America, France, Holland, Spain, Belgium, and, most surprising, the United Arab Emirates, previously valued in the underworld as a gilded sanctuary for the world’s biggest narcos. These arrests unwound over several days, from Nov. 8 to Nov. 19, 2022, but publicly disclosed this week. They’re suspected of moving astronomical loads of cocaine and other drugs around the world — some 30 tons of cocaine was seized. There were 49 arrests in all. Arrested are six alleged members of a super cartel: Ryan James Hale, a British citizen; Anthony Alfredo Martínez Meza, from Panama; Edin Gačanin, also known as “Tito”, who was born in Bosnia and emigrated to the Netherlands; Zouhair Belkhair, a dual Dutch and Moroccan citizen; and Rabhioui Bourfa and Hoesny Ajaray, two men from North Africa. None of the allegations have been proven in court. The super cartel has already been splintered. Two other alleged members were previously arrested and face trial: Ridouan Taghi, named as a Dutch-Moroccan boss of the so-called Mocro Maffia; and Raffaele Imperiale of Italy’s Camorra Mafia. Another, Daniel Kinahan, the alleged Irish drug boss is on the run from U.S. sanctions for transnational crime with a $5 million reward for their arrest.
