Water sprouts, also known as suckers or water shoots, develop as a result of heavy pruning of fruit trees. These long, whip-like shoots grow steeply upwards into the crown, robbing the tree of much of its energy and also causing excessive dense growth within the canopy. Therefore, water sprouts should be removed. But what's the best way to do this? If you remove all water sprouts completely, they'll simply reappear the following year, and you'll have gained nothing. However, there is a solution: the 50/50 rule. In this video, we'll show you how it works and how to properly remove water sprouts to finally get the problem under control. This way, seemingly useless water sprouts can even become beneficial fruiting shoots.
