I decided to hike it soon after the restriction was lifted. The oldest recorded eruption of Mount Asama dates back to 685 AD in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan). Since then, the volcano has produced many significant eruptions, including the Tennin Eruption during the Heian Period and the famous Tenmei Eruption of 1783. Even today, Mount Asama remains one of Japan's most active volcanoes. On March 23, 2023, volcanic activity increased and the alert level was raised to Level 2, closing access to Maekake-yama. Then, on May 22, 2026, the restriction was finally lifted. The trail to Maekake-yama, with the outer rim of Mount Asama on one side and the steaming summit crater (Kama-yama) on the other, felt like walking across another planet. It was a landscape where the Earth reveals itself in its rawest form — an otherworldly place that made me forget where I was. Volcanoes are alive. And no one knows how long this landscape will remain accessible.
