Director Kirill Serebrennikov's latest film, "Josef Mengele: Angel of Death," depicts the postwar life on the run of Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, who conducted horrific experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the depths of his psyche. This latest film features a tense long-take of Mengele, a war criminal, evading Nazi hunters! What a fugitive fears more than anything is being discovered and captured. For nearly 30 years, Mengele hid from various South American countries, using a variety of aliases. But as his comrades were captured one by one and he himself was placed on the international wanted list, his fear and tension grew with each passing day, pushing him to the brink of mental breakdown. The newly released footage shows Mengele, who continues his life on the run in Argentina under an assumed name, buying a copy of the far-right magazine "Der Weg" from a street stall and walking through the city, always mindful of his whereabouts. It's an ordinary, everyday scene, but walking ahead of Mengele, a war criminal, are several men who appear to be Jewish. Wearing sunglasses and a fedora to disguise himself as a different person, Mengele notices their presence and, upon noticing them, wipes the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief to further hide his face and flees into a cafe. Watching them through the window, he waits for an opportunity to get into a taxi. This suspenseful three-minute scene, shot in one long take, conveys the fugitive Mengele's fear of arrest. [Synopsis] During World War II, Josef Mengele, a doctor who conducted horrific experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camp, went into hiding in South America after the war, earning him the nickname "The Angel of Death." While his former Nazi colleagues are arrested one after the other, he cunningly evades the Mossad's sleuth, pursuing war criminals, and blends into the everyday world, still holding on to his twisted beliefs.
