Alurkar Music House is happy to present this special series of live recordings of Late Pt. Vasantrao Deshpande , recorded over 4 decades ago. We are especially thankful to Shri. Anand Badamikar , a Tabla virtuoso from Sholapur, who made these available from his personal collection. These are from different concerts held on different occasions featuring Vasantrao Deshpande’s unique style. These are NOT professional quality recordings , but are full of the live ambience of mehfils. Anand Badamikar has accompanied Vasantraoji on the Tabla and the accompaniment is equally delightful. Vasantrao Deshpande(1920-83) was indeed a genius in the field of music with an equal command of Khayals, Thumris, Dadras, Bhajans, Marathi Stage Songs(Natyasangeet) and Film Songs. He had acquired a vast fund of known from eminent Gurus like Shankarrao Sapre of Gwalior Gharana, Sureshbabu Mane of Kirana Gharana, Aman Ali Khan of Bhendibazar Gharana and through his personal contacts with luminaries like Ramkrishnabua Vaze , Master Deenanath Mangeshkar, Hirabai Barodekar and Begum Akhtar. His style reflects the influences of all these. And he has the rare sense is using that, which was apt in the chosen genre. Gifted with a seasoned and flexible voice , he could leap easily from any note to any note and execute a wide variety of Taans with an amazing speed. He himself was a good table player and has accompanied great artists like Kumar Gandharva and Hirabai Barodekar on the Tabla. He encouraged the tabla accompanist to play to his heart’s content. He was the recepient of the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1983. He was an able stage actor and singer as well, and was chosen the president of the Marathi Natya Sammelan in 1983.
