Don’t miss Undara Lava Tubes | Micro bats at dusk | Bush brekky @nextleveloz Ep 40

In this episode of ‪@nextleveloz‬ we head to the fascinating Undara Lava Tubes which is so underrated in our view. We'd always wanted to go when we lived in North Queensland but never went, so we couldn't miss it as we passed by on our way back from Cape York. We now know what we were missing out on and reckon its a must include on your Lap or even short trip to Far North Queensland. It really is an interesting and unique place and well worth including on your Lap list - and even if you aren't doing a Big Lap like us you can even visit there easily driving on sealed road 4 hours from Cairns for a short overnighter. We spent three days there, but make sure you spend at least two days and a night to get a good overview. Yes it is a bit structured organised and yes you do have to pay for the tours - because you can't visit the lava tubes themselves without a guide, but we thought it was one of the great experiences of our Lap so far. In this episode we learned about the Wind Tunnel lava tubes, and how the tunnels were formed hundreds of thousands of years ago, we take in a bush Breakfast and see the fauna at last light, including tens of thousands of microbats heading out into the night sky. We recommend the Wind Tunnel Tour if you have reasonable agility - there is a bit of rock scrambling and some rocky underfoot parts. It's not hard, but moderate fitness and steadiness is needed. Don't worry - if you think that might not be for you there is the Undara Archway Explorer tour with lots of similar information but a bit steadier underfoot with some more formed up walkways at a leisurely pace. And if you do nothing else extra try to fit in the Wildlife at Sunset tour as well - those microbats leaving the tube into the night sky are amazing - and the sunset with champas is a nice way to set the mood.
