O Que Fizeram com os 2 MILHÕES de Corpos Após a Batalha de Estalinegrado?
In the summer of 1942, the German 6th Army, under General Friedrich Paulus, advanced towards the Volga as part of Operation Blue, aiming to capture Stalingrad, an industrial and logistical hub in southern Soviet Russia. The city, which before the war had 445,000 inhabitants and housed major industrial facilities, became the scene of one of the longest and most intense urban battles of the 20th century. On August 23, 1942, the Luftwaffe carried out over a thousand sorties on the city in a few hours, causing between 40,000 and 70,000 civilian casualties in a single day. The urban fighting that began on September 13 introduced a form of warfare for which neither army was prepared: building-by-building combat, with the average survival time for newly arrived Soviet reinforcements less than 24 hours at the most critical moments. On November 19, 1942, Operation Uranus closed the encirclement of the 6th Army. Approximately 330,000 soldiers were trapped in conditions of starvation, extreme cold, and disease. On January 31, 1943, Paulus surrendered. Of the 91,000 prisoners taken into Soviet captivity, only about 6,000 returned to Germany. Total casualties, including military personnel from both sides and civilians, are estimated at between 800,000 and over one million. Decades later, the work of recovering remains continues in the Volgograd region, with annual identifications through DNA analysis continuing to return names to the anonymous fallen of the battle.
