The game is the debut project of Valve Software, a team formed by two former Microsoft employees: Mike Harrington and Gabe Newell. Interestingly, created as a reaction to the trivialization of the first-person shooter genre, Half-Life initially struggled to find a publisher, as it was considered too ambitious for the trends prevailing in the video game market at the time. Ultimately, the game was published by Sierra Online, a company at the peak of its popularity. In 2001, Gearbox Software released an improved and expanded edition for the PlayStation 2. Official ports of the game for Linux and Mac OS X were not released until January 2013, nearly 15 years after the PC release of the original. Half-Life's plot was inspired by classics such as Doom, Quake, and Resident Evil, as well as Stephen King's short story "The Mist." In English, the game's title refers to the half-life of particles, a reference to the Greek letter lambda, used in the Half-Life logo, representing the radioactive decay constant. The game is set in the late 1990s at the Black Mesa Research Facility. In the game, you play as Gordon Freeman, a 27-year-old theoretical physicist who arrives late for work on the day of a disastrous scientific experiment. The event opens a dimensional passageway, allowing extraterrestrial life from the world of Xen to enter. While attempting to escape the ruined complex, Freeman must face not only them but also soldiers from a special HECU unit, dispatched to eliminate the aliens and cover up the whole affair by eliminating all surviving employees. In terms of mechanics, Half-Life introduced a wealth of innovative elements that would define the development of first-person shooters for years to come. Compared to most dynamic shooters of the era, Valve's game surprises with, among other things, a complex and slowly developing story. For example, right at the beginning of the game, we encounter friendly characters for a long time, with neither anyone nor anything to shoot at. Instead of the cinematic cutscenes common in most similar games, Half-Life conveys important plot elements through scripted sequences created in the game engine. The gameplay itself requires the player to complete a series of combat tasks, also introducing elements not found in similar games, such as solving simple logic puzzles and arcade sequences (e.g., jumping between conveyor belts or moving islands). The protagonist has a large arsenal of weapons at his disposal, both conventional (a pistol, a shotgun, a grenade launcher, and a portable rocket launcher) and experimental ones, such as those based on alien technology. One of the most distinctive weapons in the game, however, is a simple crowbar, and many enemies can be defeated by avoiding direct confrontation and utilizing environmental elements. Occasionally, the protagonist is aided by non-player characters, such as armed guards or scientists, who fight alongside him or provide him with important information about the plot. One of the most important and highly rated gameplay elements in Half-Life is the very high-quality artificial intelligence of the enemies. Released on PC and PS2, Half-Life was built on the GoldSrc engine, a thoroughly modified version of the id Tech 2 engine used in 1996's iconic Quake. Developers at Valve Software introduced a number of improvements, such as skeletal animation and Direct3D support. Released three years after the PC original, the Sony console version also features minor improvements over the original, particularly in terms of character and weapon models, as well as expanded level and map geometry.
