Energy Effective Lighting Design and Implementation Techniques

Presenter: Shaun Darragh, Principal, SPD Light Studio. __________________________________________________________________________ Lighting design and implementation remains among of the most critical elements of energy effectiveness and sustainable architecture in both new construction and retrofit opportunities. Energy effective lighting design begins with a fundamental understanding of human perception and how we may use carefully targeted light to achieve visual goals while minimizing energy use and overall cost. This class will offer a discussion of human perception leading to practical tips on how to consider effective lighting including concepts, equipment, and controls. Real world examples and case studies will be used to illustrate effective design approaches as well as some cautionary tales. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this class students will learn: How light and surface affect human perception of space. How we may use light most effectively to achieve visual goals. Practical solutions to implementing projects to maximize energy effectiveness. The importance of lighting controls in achieving visual and energy goals. AUDIENCE This class will be most appropriate for architects, engineers, contractors, sales professionals, utility staff, and other trade allies who have some basic knowledge of lighting but would like to refine the expertise they may offer to their clients.
