This is one of my favorite beginner-friendly projects because it’s easy to customize and doesn’t require any fancy equipment. I start by sketching out a rough pattern and marking an “X” in the center of my board. That gives me four quadrants to work from, and all of my angles are usually 45°. From there, it’s all about creating mirrored sections that match on each side. For these mosaics, I don’t plan the design out digitally. I like to figure it out as I go. Sometimes pulling ideas from older designs I’ve done. If you’re new to mosaics, I recommend keeping your cuts simple at first, letting the strips run straight off the board until you get comfortable creating your own pattern. The backer I use for almost all my builds is ½-inch birch plywood. I’ve tried thinner materials before, but they tend to warp — especially on larger pieces. Smaller ones can get away with ¼-inch or ⅜-inch MDF, but birch plywood gives a sturdy, flat base that holds up over time. This is an easy, beginner-level woodworking project that helps you get familiar with patterns, angles, and framing while using scrap MDF or plywood pieces you might already have.
