Pages From Ceefax, BBC2 9/12/1980 (re-construction)
This video is reconstructed from the original teletext data as broadcast and recorded on a Betamax video cassette at the time. It is the page used by the BBC to generate Pages from Ceefax. shown on the BBC channels during any breaks in the programming, on the day the John Lennon was murdered. It is a very early example. The data were recovered using Alistair Buxton's VHS-Teletext software, which outputs the data which were used to render the video here: • BBC2 Pages from Ceefax, 9/12/1980 after re... The pages were repaired manually using the Teletext Recovery Editor here: https://teletextarchaeologist.org/sof... and the same software merged the fixed teletext packets back into the original file in the same order and position as the originals, repairing any bad rows automatically. The clock and header were also repaired automatically as part of the process. The upshot of this is that the Pages from Ceefax sequence shown is very near the original as shown at the time. There are one or two minor issues with the merge, and the John Lennon image was so badly damaged that there will be errors still in it. Once the data were fixed, the merged file is rendered using the Teletext Player from here: https://teletextarchaeologist.org/sof... - the Player shows the teletext data as broadcast in an emulation. The TiFax character set was used, and the rolling header shows the currently broadcast page, since this was the configuration of the decoder at the time.
