The name derives from "Cis-Sturninum", on this side of Sturni (Ostuni), an ancient Japigio center near Ostuni which had taken its name from Sturno, companion of the Homeric hero Diomede; escaped the Trojan War. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 The territory of the municipality of Cisternino was inhabited, since the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic, by human nuclei coming from the north of the peninsula or from the Sicilian-African area and who left numerous traces of their life on the hills where they set up their seasonal camps. Even today, in the area of ​​Mount Specchia, on the hills of Restano and on the uncultivated cliffs of Serra Amara, prehistoric tools of all kinds are found: spikes of orange blossom, blades, scrapers and burins for carving bones. These human communities continued to thicken, until they reached a considerable number of settlements in the Bronze Age; dozens of stations of this age have recently been located in various areas of the territory. The town was allegedly conquered by the romans, and, later, plundered by the Goths and subsequently fell into ruin. The current historic center of Cisternino would be reborn thanks to the Basilian monks in the Middle Ages.
