Austria, 1945--a stiff-necked British Army Major is in charge of displaced persons with the assistance of a multilingual refugee. The interpreter turns out ot be a Russian deserter and not the Slav he has claimed. When the time comes for the interpreter to be turned over to the Soviets, the Major's young aide tries to prevent him from turning the interpreter in to the Soviets.
