A City Below, Clouds Above — Driving Enshi’s Hidden Mountain Road | Hubei, China | 4K POV
A city below, clouds above — this drive explores Wangchengpo, a quiet mountain area just outside Enshi City in western Hubei, China. Located near Xiaoduchuan Subdistrict, Wangchengpo is often known as Enshi’s “backyard mountain.” It is one of the closest elevated viewpoints to the urban area, where local residents come for fresh air, cooler weather, forest scenery, sunrise views, camping, and a peaceful escape from the city below. This 4K POV drive begins at Shimiao Junction on G318 National Highway, then follows the mountain road toward Wangchengpo before returning along the same route. Although the drive stays close to Enshi City, the road quickly leaves the busy national highway and enters a quieter mountain landscape of forests, slopes, villages, and cloudy ridgelines. Wangchengpo sits above the city at an elevation of roughly 1,100 to 1,500 meters, with this drive reaching up to 1,176 meters. The name “Wangchengpo” literally suggests a slope from which one can look toward the city. From this area, Enshi’s urban valley lies below, while the surrounding mountains, cool air, and drifting clouds create a completely different atmosphere from the city center. The road featured in this video is the Shimiao–Wangchengpo rural road, a direct connection from G318 National Highway toward Wangchengpo. Completed and opened in 2025, this “Four Good Rural Road” improved access between Shimiao, Wangchengpo Village, and the older Maowang Road. It also shortened the drive between Wangchengpo and the G318 corridor, supporting local tourism, rural transport, camping, and leisure development. Along the route, the landscape reflects the typical mountain character of Enshi: steep slopes, forested hillsides, scattered village houses, and narrow valleys shaped by the complex terrain of western Hubei. Enshi is widely known for its karst landforms, deep canyons, ethnic minority culture, and mountain settlements. Wangchengpo offers a gentler, more local side of this region — not a grand canyon or a dramatic cliff road, but a nearby mountain retreat closely connected to everyday life in Enshi. The area also carries traces of local religious and cultural history. Ruins such as Ziyun Taoist Temple and Bijia Mountain Guanyin Temple are said to remain in the surrounding mountains. Although only fragments survive today, these places reflect the long presence of Buddhist and Taoist culture in the local landscape. In recent years, Wangchengpo has become a popular suburban destination for camping, paragliding, stargazing, sunrise watching, and weekend relaxation. Plans for the Wangchen Peak camping resort further show how this mountain area is being developed as a leisure destination for Enshi residents and visitors. This is not an extreme mountain road, but a calm and atmospheric drive into the hills above Enshi — a short round trip from the G318 corridor into the city’s hidden backyard. 📍 Route Information Start: Shimiao Junction (G318 National Highway), Enshi, Hubei, China Middle Point: Wangchengpo, Enshi, Hubei, China End: Shimiao Junction (G318 National Highway), Enshi, Hubei, China Route Type: Wangchengpo Round Trip Distance: 16.9 km Duration: 39 minutes Elevation: 695 m – 1176 m Date: May 12 Weather: Cloudy 🌏 About This Drive Region: Enshi, Hubei, China Road: Shimiao–Wangchengpo Rural Road / G318 Connection Terrain: Suburban mountain road, forested slopes, village roads Highlights: Wangchengpo, Enshi’s backyard mountain, cloudy mountain scenery, G318 connection, newly improved rural road, local leisure and camping area If you enjoy quiet mountain roads, hidden parts of China, and immersive real-time driving journeys, this route offers a different view of Enshi — not from a famous canyon, but from the peaceful hills above the city.
