From June 23rd to 24th, I experienced one of the most important celebrations in the Peruvian Amazon: the Feast of Saint John in Tingo María, Huánuco. For two days, I explored its streets, markets, and rivers to learn how an entire city prepares to pay homage to Saint John the Baptist in a festival that unites faith, gastronomy, music, and Amazonian traditions. The experience began in the Tingo María market, where hundreds of families buy the ingredients to prepare juane, the most emblematic dish of the Peruvian jungle and the undisputed star of this celebration. I also witnessed the traditional Tulumayo Bonfire, one of the most anticipated activities of the eve, which culminated in music, dances, and the traditional pandilla (a type of dance) with the men and women of Tingo María. On June 24, the main day of the festival, I traveled along the banks of the Huallaga and Monzón rivers, where thousands of families gather to share juane, enjoy nature, and keep alive a tradition passed down through generations.
