Varanasi is often addressed with adjectives like 'city of temples, streets and ghats', 'religious capital of India', 'city of Lord Shiva', 'city of lamps', 'knowledge city' etc. According to one opinion, the oldest temple and the first ghat built near the confluence of Varuna and Ganga rivers came to be known as Kashi after the name of Keshav.
