As the saying goes: Don't change a winning team. And that's exactly what Volkswagen did with the Kombi, during its 56 years of production in Brazil. This is a 2006 Kombi with a 1.4 flex engine and in today's video I'm going to show you all the details of this car. The positive and negative points and see if it's worth buying this beautiful lady today. Briefly talking about the history of the Kombi, because a model that was produced for so long deserves a video just about that. The Kombi went into Brazilian production in June 1957, it was the first Volkswagen produced here in Brazil. The Beetle would only be produced here in 1959. The first models had a 1200 engine with just 36 horsepower. In 1967, the 1500 engine with 52 horsepower arrived, with a skirt and blouse paint job and the luxury version. This first phase is known as the owl, and it is undoubtedly the most charming Kombi model. In the 1976 model year, the Kombi underwent major changes: the front was the same as the German T2 model, with a large single windshield, and the front doors were larger, making it easier to get in. However, here comes Volkswagen's first blunder. It updated the Kombi by half, while in Europe the Kombi received a completely new body, with sliding doors, in Brazil the original body was kept. At the rear, only the taillights changed. At least it received mechanical updates and reinforcements to its structure. The engine was now the famous 1600 with 58 horsepower. In 1997, the Kombi would undergo its biggest change in its life in Brazil, it finally received the body of the German Kombi T2, only 30 years late, not much, right? Lol... gaining sliding doors, a higher roof, new air intakes and bumpers painted on the body. In 1998, the 1600 engine gained multipoint electronic injection and a catalytic converter to meet new pollutant emissions standards — it was the only VW with air-cooled injection in Brazil. And finally, at the end of 2005, the Kombi gained a water-cooled engine, the 1.4 Flex engine from the Fox that was exported to Europe. If you think Volkswagen was being kind and focused on fuel economy, you're wrong. The change happened because there was no way to meet the new noise limits with the air-cooled engine. The fact is that, in addition to being quieter, it brought consistent gains in performance and economy. But we'll talk about the engine later. An interesting fact is that the pedal gained an electronic accelerator, which is why if you look closely, the accelerator comes from above, like a modern car, but the brake and clutch come from the floor, as in the original design. And to the sadness of many, at the end of 2013, the Kombi was discontinued in Brazil. Starting in 2014, all vehicles produced in Brazil had airbags and ABS. I can tell you that Volkswagen studied this possibility, but soon gave up. How can you put an airbag in a car where the driver is practically the bumper? Okay, Rodrigo, and how much does a Kombi like this cost? According to the Fipe table, a Kombi like this costs 25 thousand reais, but you should prepare your wallet because a model in good condition can easily cost more than 30 thousand reais. If we compare it to other vans, it still has a great cost-benefit ratio.
