They provide students with a study guideline at the beginning of an assignment that tells students what they are to accomplish or master by the end of the assignment. A criterion referenced test is used to measure lesson mastery. In a criterion referenced test, every question refers back to pre-stated criteria. Used as a diagnostic instrument, the test tells if a student needs corrective help. When a question is missed, it signals the teacher that the student has not mastered the criteria. The teacher can prescribe instruction to assist the student in learning. Conversely, if the student demonstrates mastery on the test, enrichment activities can be assigned.
