The Shining: The Most Revealing Literary Criticism Ever

Stephen King published The Shining in 1977. He was a functioning alcoholic. His wife had threatened to leave him. He had a young son he was terrifying. He wrote the entire book and did not recognize himself in it until years later. That's not a detail about the novel. That's the novel. In this video I argue that The Shining is almost never analyzed correctly — including by King himself, at least for a long time. The supernatural elements are real within the story. But they're not what the book is about. The book is about what it feels like to be inside a family where the father is an alcoholic. The Overlook Hotel doesn't corrupt Jack Torrance. It reveals him. Danny's shining isn't a gift — it's a wound. A wound every child of an addict will recognize. And King's visceral hatred of Kubrick's adaptation isn't ego. It's the most revealing piece of literary criticism the book has ever received. Kubrick was interested in what Jack did. King was interested in why.
