Steam at Toddington | LMS Black 5 45110 Back from a Multi-Year Overhaul & GWR 3850 | GWSR 2026 |

Join me at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway as I spend the day at Toddington filming LMS Black 5 No. 45110 in action on a Red Timetable service, working alongside GWR heavy freight locomotive No. 3850. Although 45110 made its return to traffic during the railway’s Cotswold Festival of Steam Gala, this video was filmed around a month later, showing the locomotive in regular passenger service rather than during the gala. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway recently announced that, following an agreement with the locomotive’s owner, West Coast Railways, 45110 will remain in the Cotswolds on an extended six-month loan. This gives visitors plenty of opportunities to ride behind the famous LMS Black 5, with locomotive rosters published by the railway to help plan visits. Built by Vulcan Foundry in 1935 as LMS No. 5110 (later BR No. 45110), the locomotive has had a remarkable preservation career. Purchased directly from British Railways following the famous Fifteen Guinea Special in 1968, it spent many years based at the Severn Valley Railway before being sold in 2023 for a full overhaul at Carnforth. Following completion of its restoration, 45110 returned to steam in May 2026, making its first passenger appearances in several years at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. Also featured is GWR 2-8-0 No. 3850, a member of the 2884 Class built in 1942 for heavy freight work. Owned by Dinmore Manor Locomotive Limited, the locomotive returned to traffic in August 2024 after a comprehensive ten-year overhaul and is currently carrying its striking wartime black Great Western Railway livery. The video begins with a look around Toddington’s Steam and Diesel Depot, where we see several locomotives currently based at the railway. One of the highlights is Southern Railway Battle of Britain Class No. 34070 Manston. Built at Brighton Works in November 1947, Manston was the last Battle of Britain class locomotive to be constructed. After withdrawal from British Railways service in 1964, it spent 18 years at Barry Scrapyard before being rescued and eventually returning to steam in 2008. Following repairs and overhaul after a minor collision in 2017, it returned to traffic in 2022. In 2026, the locomotive is visiting the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway on hire from the Swanage Railway and Southern Locomotives Ltd, including appearances during the Cotswold Festival of Steam and an extended stay through to early July. Also seen on depot is the newly completed GWR Grange Class No. 6880 Betton Grange. Completed in 2025 by the 6880 Betton Grange Society, the locomotive is the first brand-new Grange Class locomotive to be built and is one of Britain’s newest operational steam locomotives. Alongside the steam locomotives, we also take a look at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway’s home diesel fleet, which can be found around the depot during our visit.
