DNews spoke with Miguel Wissinger, head of the Argentine humanitarian mission sent to Venezuela after two devastating earthquakes. Argentina was one of the first countries to send specialized search and rescue aid. The Argentine contingent arrived in La Guaira and began working in coordination with fire departments, police, and other international teams, including those from Brazil and Spain. The situation in the affected areas is devastating, with buildings collapsed on top of each other, complicating the work and increasing the risk for rescuers. A crucial element in the rescue efforts is the use of dog teams trained to detect people, whether alive or deceased, under the rubble. These dogs can mark specific locations to focus efforts and save vital time. One of these dogs, named Bart, managed to rescue two children who had been trapped under the rubble for almost three days, generating hope among the teams. The colonel emphasizes the importance of the bond between the dogs and their handlers, as well as the role of the veterinarian, in maintaining the effectiveness of the operations. Despite the fatigue and the complexity of the work, the team maintains hope and the conviction that survivors can still be found, relying on shift work and the experience of the most veteran members.
