The term “Adultification” is used in psychology and sociology to describe the way some children are treated by adults as being more mature than they are. She informs Saskia the effect it has on a child’s development, emotional health, and future relationships after experiencing adultification. The video also includes four contributors who openly talk about their experiences of being adultified by their parents / caregivers. Sharnah Harper was caught in the middle of her parent's divorce and at 16, she started paying her parents' mortgage. Samira Hyde lived without a parent for long periods of time. She resumed adult responsibilities such as going to her younger siblings' parent's evenings. Graham Pitkin experienced gang culture when he was young, which challenged his sense of identity. Craig Shield worked at a young age. His father left the family leaving him to become “the man of the house”. “Adultification is a breach of child safeguarding legislation, undermining children's rights to protection."
