Friday marks 10 years since a Ferguson police officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown Jr. The killing and the decision not to charge the officer sparked protests and riots across the nation, led to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation that revealed racially biased policing, and catapulted the Black Lives Matter movement into the mainstream through social media. The decade since that August afternoon has seen a reckoning of policing and court practices in Ferguson, division surrounding the facts of Brown’s death, and efforts to rebuild the community.
