Today, we will discuss the incident that gave its name to the longest chapter of the Quran: the incident of al-Baqarah. Moses said to his people, "Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Are you mocking us?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant." 68. They said, "Call upon your Lord on our behalf to make clear to us what it is." Moses said, "Allah says, 'It is a cow, neither old nor young, but in between.' So do as you are commanded." 69. They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us its color." He said, "It is a yellow cow, with bright fur, pleasing to the beholders." 70. They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what kind of cow it is. We do not understand what kind of cow to slaughter, but God willing, we will find the way to do what we are commanded." 71. (Moses) said, "Thus says Allah: It is a cow not yet subjected to tyranny, nor plowing the land, nor irrigating the fields, nor free-ranging, with no variegation in its color." They said, "Now you have told the truth." So they slaughtered it, but they nearly did not. 72. And recall when you killed a man and disputed with one another about it, but Allah will bring to light what you concealed. 73. We said, "Now strike the man with a piece of the cow."
