Unlike exams such as CT scans or MRIs, which primarily assess anatomy, PET scans allow for the analysis of the **metabolic functioning of the body's cells**. In this exam, the patient is given a small amount of a **radiopharmaceutical**, usually glucose labeled with fluorine-18 (FDG). Since tumor cells tend to have a faster metabolism, they consume more glucose than normal tissues. The PET scan identifies these areas of increased uptake, helping to locate tumors, metastases, and even disease recurrences early. PET-CT combines two technologies in a single exam: **positron emission tomography (PET)**, which shows metabolic activity, and **computed tomography (CT)**, which provides precise anatomical details. This image fusion significantly increases diagnostic accuracy and helps the physician make more informed treatment decisions, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Among the *main indications for PET scans* are the initial staging of cancer, evaluation of response to cancer treatment, investigation of metastases, and differentiation between scar tissue and active disease. In addition to oncology, the examination is also used in some neurological diseases, such as epilepsy and dementia, and in cardiology to assess the viability of the heart muscle. Preparation for a PET scan usually includes fasting for a few hours and rigorous blood glucose control, especially in diabetic patients, as high blood sugar levels can interfere with the quality of the examination. The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and generally lasts between 1 and 2 hours, including the rest time after the administration of the radiopharmaceutical. In short, a PET scan is a high-tech examination that allows one to see beyond anatomy, identifying metabolic changes that often do not appear in other imaging methods. Therefore, it has become an essential tool in modern medicine, especially in the care and monitoring of cancer patients. 🔵 New Cancer Treatments: Dr. Cleuber Barbosa de Oliveira is a physician and holds CRM MG 36865.
