Most people, when thinking of finds, probably picture gold coins and precious ancient artifacts. But is this really true? What do archaeologists really find? How do they live and work? I had the chance to spend several months on a real archaeological expedition, organized by the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Such expeditions don't employ black market diggers or walkers with metal detectors—they involve real science. And in these times, when the ideas of so-called "alternative scientists" and adherents of various conspiracy theories have once again become popular, it's especially important to talk about real science—and archaeology is precisely that. Is there room for sensations and genuine mysteries in it? Of course there is, but you probably don't imagine them that way.
