In this video, Minnesota oil painter Dan Olson of Northland Images practices the tradition of plein air painting at Mountain Lake Overlook in the Gunflint District, overlooking the international border between the United States and Canada. Rather than creating a landscape from memory or a photograph, Dan paints en plein air—working outdoors, immersed in the very landscape that inspires his work. A member of the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota, Dan has spent years exploring and painting the Gunflint Trail, the Boundary Waters, the North Shore, and Isle Royale. His process begins with plein air studies created on location, capturing the light, atmosphere, and emotion of a fleeting moment before many of those studies evolve into larger studio paintings. Through his artwork, Dan hopes to communicate just how rare, beautiful, and important these northern wild places truly are.
