Despite centuries of neglect surrounding the Berber language in the Canary Islands, awareness of their origins and of Berber as the language of their ancestors is growing daily. Young people are reaffirming their connection to their Berber roots and leading a cultural resistance within contemporary island society. Here in Candelaria, we met with some of these Berber activists to shed light on this issue of identity.
