Author: Ualisson Bellon from the University of Edinburgh, UK Magnetic microscopy is increasingly becoming an important tool in palaeomagnetism. As the field moves from bulk measurements towards micropalaeomagnetism, it is essential to understand what signals we should expect from individual magnetic particles and particle assemblages. In this talk, I will show how micromagnetic modelling can help us predict the stray-field behaviour of particles with different sizes, shapes, and domain states as a function of microscope probing distance. I will highlight the relative contributions of dipolar and non-dipolar field components, the limiting effects of noise, the response of particle clusters, and the extent to which different source properties can — or cannot — be recovered from magnetic microscopy data.
